Summer 2025 | Public Backcountry Hikes

Thanks for your interest in our Summer 2025 guided hikes. We travel on US Forest Service trails around Eagle County. Our guides are Wilderness First Responders and Certified Interpretive Guides. We hike at a reasonable pace and take stops along the way to learn about the natural world that we are hiking in.

June

    7 miles roundtrip/1,500 ft. elevation gain
    Near Minturn

    Hiking season kick off! We will be traveling through open meadows and some forests as we try to find dry trails and good views!

    Near Minturn

    Travel up switchbacks to the top of Lionshead Rock. Enjoy some great views over Minturn and Mt. of the Holy Cross in the distance.

    Near Vail

    Lost Lake is a gem, offering great views of the Gore Range and a picturesque lunch spot at the lake.

    Near Vail pass

    Short but a bit steep. The effort is well worth the panoramic view of the Gore Range at the top of the hike.

    5 miles roundtrip/2,500 ft. elevation gain
    Near Minturn and Vail

    We will hike up Game Creek Trail and take Vail's Eagle Bahn Gondola to Lionshead Garage, where our vehicle will await us. An uphill-only hike with great views and wildflowers.

    Near Eagle

    A beautiful alpine lake nestled under some 12,000' peaks!

    9 miles roundtrip/2,750 ft. elevation gain
    Near Red Cliff

    It's one of the most classic loop hikes in the area. We will hike Fancy Lake to Fancy Pass to Missouri Lakes and back to the trailhead. Be prepared for a long day.

    A pleasant ascent to a 12,000' peak with great views!

    11 miles roundtrip/3,500 ft. elevation gain
    Near Minturn

    Our biggest and highest public hike that we offer. Please carefully consider if you are ready for this 13er. We will plan to wake up early and turn around if we are concerned about thunderstorms. Please reach out if you have questions!

    10 miles roundtrip/2,500 ft. elevation gain
    Near Camp Hale

    From Camp Hale, we will follow the Colorado Trail as it climbs to Kokomo Pass at 12,000'. There are excellent views at the top and along the way.

    4 miles roundtrip/750 ft. elevation gain
    Near Homestake

    A slightly bumpy drive brings us to a fairly short hike that ends at beautiful alpine lakes. The trail is short, but features plenty of uneven terrain and a couple of steep sections to navigate through.

    6.5 miles roundtrip/1,800 ft. elevation gain
    Near Eagle, CO

    Mt. Thomas offers panoramic views of several mountain ranges and unique trail sections that were previously burned by the 2021 Sylvan Lake Fire.

    Near Vail Pass

    The Corral Creek trail will take us to an alpine meadow beneath Uneava Peak.

  • Full Day 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
    11.5 miles roundtrip/2,150 ft. elevation gain
    Near Edwards

    This loop begins by climbing up switchbacks up the Stag Gulch Trail. It then meets a large meadow that often offers great views and a cool breeze. We will then dscend back down the Colorow Creek trail back to the trailhead.

    8.5 miles roundtrip/1,750 ft. elevation gain
    Near Minturn

    We will hike out-and-back on the Two Elk Trail which begins near Minturn and travels under the Vail Back Bowls. At this time of year, the trail offers a fairly secluded experience with potential for some yellow aspen trees.

PLEASE NOTE: Start and end times are approximate. Approximate start and end times will fluctuate based on weather, hiking pace of the group, etc. Your guide will send you an email 1-2 days before with exact start and estimated end time informed by weather, drive time, etc. 

Start time: Time you need to be at Walking Mountains Avon Campus to take transportation to the trailhead. Start times may be subject to change.

End time: Indicates time you should be back to your car at Walking Mountains.
