The Science Behind
Wednesday July 14th
6:30 to 8:00pm
Join us as we put pen to paper and explore scientific sketching. From famous field guides to your personal sketch pad, scientific sketching is a powerful tool that helps professionals and hobbyists alike record the world around them. Your registration includes a sketching kit but you don't need any artistic skills to join in on the fun. We will work to sharpen our existing observational skills and learn a few new techniques as well.
When not teaching programs as the Walking Mountains' Girls in Science Coordinator, Christy Belardo, can be found in front of a plant or animal specimen drawing. When you find Christy on a trail, she can be seen closely examining a flower or an aquatic macroinvertebrate in a stream, while carefully sketching her observations. Christy, a self-taught scientific illustrator, her pen-and-ink sketches help her understand the natural world and the animals and plants that live there. She holds a Masters of Science in Natural Science Education and focused her masters research on how science can be integrated with art in education. By combining her love for science and art, Christy incorporates her artistic skills into her science teaching to instill a multi-disciplinary approach of careful observation and creativity to her students. Christy sells her artwork on commission, donates to non-profit fundraisers, and just recently illustrated her first book that should be released this upcoming fall!
The Science Behind is intended for an adult audience. Your registration includes a small sketching kit.
